Saraswati Puja is the celebration of education, wisdom and learning. The Goddess represents the unending spirit of indomitable knowledge, burning deep within every individual. The offerings presented before the Goddess is more than mere offerings, but a heartfelt desire and plea sent, for prayers to be granted. The connotation of the festival varies from one individual to the other. For some individuals, specifically in West Bengal, the day witnesses the grand celebration of love, as young people, mainly couples go out for outings or pandal hopping once the puja is over at each home. The Damocles’ Sword hanging over the educational scenario of the state during current times is truly concerning.
The canonization of the festival differs from one part of the country to the other. In certain parts of the country, Basant Panchami is celebrated. The festival ends up almost becoming like a grand fiesta of songs and celebrations, with fairs being set up in various areas. In a state where qualified teachers are compelled to be unemployed, or have been sacked from their jobs just recently, the question regarding the importance of education still remains quite impermanent. Education is not something which can be celebrated on a single day, but rather every single day.
