India produced a commanding performance against arch-rivals Pakistan, defeating them 5–3 in an eight-goal thriller at the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup in Amstelveen, Netherlands, on Wednesday, August 19. The victory not only gave India bragging rights in one of hockey’s biggest rivalries but also secured their place in the tournament’s second round, while Pakistan were eliminated.
India started the match aggressively and quickly established control. Captain Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoring through a penalty corner in the fifth minute, before Abhishek doubled India’s advantage in the 11th minute. Harmanpreet then struck again in the 21st minute, while Abhishek added his second goal just three minutes later, giving India a commanding 4–2 lead by the end of the first half.
Pakistan refused to give up. Shahid Hannan scored twice, while Sufyan Khan added another, keeping the match tense and preventing India from running away with the result. India, however, maintained their composure and Hardik Singh converted a penalty stroke in the 35th minute to restore a crucial two-goal cushion.
The final whistle confirmed a 5–3 victory for India, extending their strong record against Pakistan while sending the Indian team into the next phase of the World Cup. India finished the Pool D stage behind England and advanced to Pool E in the second round, where the competition will become even tougher.
The result is particularly significant after India’s earlier 2–4 defeat to England, which had put pressure on their final pool match. A result against Pakistan was crucial for India’s qualification hopes, and the team responded with an attacking display in front of a highly charged atmosphere at Wagener Stadium.
