With only eight matches remaining in their World Test Championship campaign, India need at least six victories to keep their qualification hopes firmly alive. That makes the upcoming Test against Sri Lanka extremely important. There is little room for experimentation or complacency.
The toss could prove crucial. If India win it, bowling first should be the preferred option, particularly if the conditions offer dampness and assistance for the seamers. India are slightly bowling-heavy at present, and they must maximise that advantage by putting Sri Lanka under pressure early.
India should continue with Kuldeep Yadav, while bringing in Aquib for Prasidh Krishna. Prasidh bowled well and deserves credit, but Aquib could provide additional batting depth, giving India greater balance.
The top order also carries enormous responsibility. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill must value their wickets and spend considerable time at the crease. India cannot afford another collapse after gaining the advantage with the ball.
The ideal scenario would be to dismiss Sri Lanka quickly in the first innings, before allowing India’s batsmen to dominate. India should aim to bat for close to two days and post a 450-plus total, creating scoreboard pressure before finishing the match with another strong bowling performance.
Kuldeep could be the key. He appears to have found his rhythm, but his length outside the off stump will be critical in creating uncertainty among Sri Lanka’s batsmen. Meanwhile, India will expect Mohammed Siraj to provide the early breakthrough.
The equation is simple: India have eight Tests left and need six wins. Every opportunity matters now. This is not just another Test—it is another step in India’s WTC survival race.
