The road to the 2027 ODI World Cup is beginning to reveal some interesting contenders, and South Africa and Sri Lanka are quietly making their presence felt.
South Africa’s showing at home against Australia was about more than the contributions of Brezkee and Marco Jansen. The biggest positive was Temba Bavuma’s captaincy. His bowling changes and field placements were timely and purposeful, particularly when Australia made a strong start. Australia’s middle and lower order, however, appeared short of experience on a demanding Durban surface.
Jansen continues to carry expectations reminiscent of the fast-bowling impact India witnessed from Ashish Nehra in the 2003 World Cup. But South Africa’s greater encouragement came from Corbin Bosch and George Fortuin, whose bowling provided variety and control. If that combination continues to develop, South Africa could present a formidable challenge in the 2027 World Cup, especially in familiar home conditions.
South Africa will now want to finish the series in the next match rather than allow Australia a deciding third game. With the first Test also scheduled at Durban, the contest has another intriguing chapter ahead.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, produced perhaps the more eye-catching turnaround. After an ordinary opening game, Sachindu provided some encouragement with the ball. The second match, however, was a comprehensive Sri Lankan statement. Kusal Mendis led from the front, the top order contributed collectively, Janith produced a standout innings, and Dunith Wellalage once again demonstrated his ability to influence the game with the ball.
Sri Lanka may become one of the more unpredictable and difficult opponents in 2027. An away-series victory would strengthen that belief.
For India, the countdown now becomes more serious. The home ODI series against West Indies, followed by three ODIs at home and five in New Zealand, could provide critical evidence of India’s combinations, adaptability and World Cup readiness.
The 2027 picture is still evolving—but South Africa and Sri Lanka are making sure India will not have an easy road.
