‘Ramayana ‘is one of the biggest mahakavyas ever composed in India. With over three hundred variations available throughout the world, the text is homogeneous in the perspective of its narrative. The plot primarily focuses on the journey and life of Prince Rama, highlighting his superior qualities as the ideal man. Contrary to this superimposed perspective, ‘The Slaying of Meghnad ‘by Michael Madhusudan Dutta takes a fresh look at the epic. Portraying Ravan and Meghnad as the heroes of the poem, Dutta depicted the divine hero as somebody who took the aid of the gods in order to win the war.
Michael Madhusudan Dutta also created a new meter called the ‘tripodi poyar ‘. His genius lay in how he crafted his poems with a revolutionary perspective. This was somehow based off his own life. Influenced by the Christian beliefs and education system at a young age while studying in university, he soon adopted Christianity. Deserting his birth religion, he created the waves of a revolutionary fire which would eventually inspire youth across the place. His contribution to Bengali literature is highly significant. He was the first person to write Bengali satires. Satires written by him portrayed the harsh social reality prevalent during those times .
