Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned from his post on Saturday amid mounting nationwide protests over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, including the NEET-UG controversy. The resignation came after weeks of demonstrations led by student groups demanding accountability, transparency, and comprehensive reforms in India’s examination system.
Announcing his decision through a post on X (formerly Twitter), Pradhan said he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In his message, he stated that he had accepted responsibility throughout the crisis and believed stepping down was necessary to ensure that the ongoing controversy did not adversely affect students’ futures or public confidence in the education system.
The resignation follows sustained protests across several states, with students and youth organizations calling for reforms in the conduct of national entrance examinations. Demonstrators alleged systemic failures and demanded greater transparency and accountability from the authorities responsible for conducting competitive exams.
Political leaders and student organizations described the resignation as a significant development, while emphasizing that the demand for structural reforms in India’s examination process remains unchanged.
