B.R. Ambedkar’s text ‘The Annihilation of Caste ‘deals with a very important question. Can the Indian society be reconstructed again? Ambedkar takes a look at one of the basic pillars or structures of the Indian society. The caste system has been prevalent in the country for quite a long time. Since the advent of the Early Vedic Age, there has been a belief that a person should follow his predecessor’s footsteps by taking up the profession of the caste they are born into. The Chatur varna system depends primarily on hereditary and hierarchy in the social structure.
Even in modern India, caste system is still catered to. In 2014, a young Dalit student was beaten to death just because he had taken a sip of the water reserved for the upper caste students and the teacher. This discrimination is still prevalent in rural and underdeveloped areas. Caste system has become an integral part of our mindset in the current times. The mindset of the society is really hard to change at times. What becomes to solution then? This is the very question that the text tries to answer. Here enters the tiff with M K Gandhi. While Gandhi considered untouchability to be a sin, Ambedkar deciphered it as a form of humiliation.
