Heavy rain and thunderstorms disrupted life across Delhi-NCR on Monday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for several districts. Heavy showers were reported particularly across parts of South Delhi and surrounding areas, resulting in waterlogging and major traffic slowdowns.
The IMD warned of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and winds of around 30–40 kmph in several parts of the capital. The warning covers areas including South-East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North-East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi and other parts of the city.
The rain also affected commuters travelling between Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad. Several roads witnessed waterlogging, while traffic moved slowly. Some commuters reported that journeys which normally take much less time were taking one to one-and-a-half hours.
The weather has also become a major social-media talking point, with residents posting videos and photographs of dark skies, flooded roads and traffic congestion.
The IMD expects the weather to remain hot and humid after the rain, with scattered rainfall possible over the next couple of days.
Why it matters: Delhi-NCR’s repeated waterlogging during intense rainfall has again brought attention to drainage, traffic management and urban infrastructure.
